A scenery drive along olive trees will bring us to Gortyn in southern Crete, to one of the most powerful city states of ancient Crete. After the Roman conquest of Crete in 67 BC, Gortyn, which was well disposed towards Rome, became capital of Crete, replacing Knossos.
